To have the best chances of success it is recommended to freeze the eggs before the age of 35 as there are better quality eggs to form normal embryos in the future. However if you are diagnosed with a disease that can decrease the quality and quantity of your eggs you may want to consider freezing your eggs even earlier. If you are over 35, you can freeze eggs but we would optimize strategies to improve the chances of a future pregnancy. In some patients oocyte banking is performed to collect a greater number of eggs.

In general cases where women are only freezing eggs for social reasons, we promote that they should freeze by the age of around 30, 31, 32 for best results and if the endometriosis is associated, I would say it would be late 20s or even mid-20s. There is there is no direct indicator of ovarian reserve but there are three indirect indicators of ovarian reserve: the first is age, the second is antral follicle count which is the set of follicles which come out of the reserve for that particular month and antral follicle count roughly remains the same but every month it can be a little different so, it is seen best in the ultrasound on day two or three or four of the cycle and the third indicator which tells us about the ovarian reserve, well how big is it, is a blood test called AMH which is the Anti-Mullerian hormone.

That’s a tough question, what’s the best egg to freeze? What’s the best age? Anytime that you’re concerned about your future fertility is the best age to freeze them. When you look scientifically, you need to ask who’s going to come back and use those eggs in the future? Women in their 20s have a good quality of eggs and we’ll make an ample number of eggs in the egg freezing process, but they’re less likely to come back and use them in the future because they’re most likely to find a partner and get pregnant on their own. Women in their late 30s, early 40s; may not have good quality because of their age but we do encourage them to freeze them because if you haven’t found a partner, haven’t decided to get pregnant, you’re 45 and you froze eggs when you were 40. Those eggs at 40 are still better quality than the eggs at 45. Now the ideal time to freeze eggs is anywhere between 32 years of age and 37. And the reason why we say that is because, in that age group, you can have good quality, a good quantity and also the likelihood of women coming back to use those eggs falls right in that age group because on average, if you’re going to use those eggs most women come back about 7 years after they retrieve them to use them.

The optimal age range for egg freezing is between 30 and 34 years old. Over 35 years old there is a decrease in the number of oocytes available and an increase of oocytes that have an abnormal number of chromosomes which can lead to abnormal fertilization or early pregnancy loss and therefore infertility.

Ideally we recommend women to freeze their eggs before 35 years old because they will have a better chance and we will need a lower number of eggs to have a successful pregnancy. The number of eggs will depend on the age of the patient the older the patient the more number of eggs we will need.

The rule is the younger you are, the higher the chance of success of the process – not just with freezing eggs but with IVF fertility treatment in general.
Younger eggs are more likely to survive the thawing process they’re also more likely to be chromosomally be normal or euploid as we call them giving them a much higher chance of success.

The best age to freeze eggs is under 35. Since we have found out through many studies that have been performed so far that the egg quality is affected by a woman’s age, that’s why women that are really interested in social freezing should make this decision before they are 35. Of course, we perform egg freezing for women over 35, if there is a special indication for that. Nevertheless, we know that the quality of oocytes gets poorer with the advancement of age.

We know now that the best age to freeze eggs is as soon as possible but also we know that if you can make a decision below age of 35, we know that the outcome would be better because we know that later on when we thaw the eggs  we will have a bigger chance to achieve the pregnancy. This is related to the fact that the eggs reduce their quality when the time goes by but it doesn’t mean that you cannot think of freezing your eggs  if you are 36, 37 or even 38 but we know that the chances to achieve the pregnancy would be lower compared to what it would be. The ideal time would be to get them frozen below 35 because that is the moment  we can get the best chance of live birth later on.

The best age for women to preserve fertility is before they reach 35, also in some cases it might be required to preserve the fertility sooner. Some women are affected with some diseases that will impact the fertility such as, for example, endometriosis, PCOS or diminished ovarian reserve, so for these women if they want to have kids in the future they should consider to preserve fertility as soon as possible even before they are 35 years old. Women are born with a limited number of eggs and that number decreases with age and additionally the remaining eggs lose the quality – older women, older are eggs and that’s why it is more difficult for them to get pregnant. Ideally, if you are thinking of preserving fertility, the best age is before 35 years old.
