How old is too old for IVF?
What is the maximum age for IVF?
Female fertility begins to decline around the age of 30, at 35 it drops rapidly. Women over the age of 43 are not usually advised to undergo IVF with their own eggs. Most of the time, reproductive specialists recommend using donor eggs, as older eggs have a higher chance of being chromosomally abnormal.
Although there isn’t a specific age at which we should consider discarding IVF, it’s true that the success rates decrease significantly beyond certain ages. Patients should be made aware of this fact. In our clinic, we typically advise patients over 43 with infertility issues that IVF may offer very low success rates. As a first option, we often recommend egg donation. In certain cases, such as for single women or lesbian couples without fertility problems, we may extend this age limit to 45. However, studies indicate that the live birth rate per cycle started after 45 is less than 1%. This is something patients should understand before beginning the stimulation process.
