How DHEA can improve fertility?
In what way DHEA may help me when trying to conceive?
In what cases DHEA is useful? Can it have a bad influence in some cases? How does it work, and who can benefit from it?
Some studies suggest using DHEA for women with poor ovarian reserve in order to improve their response for stimulation and we know that different interventions have been tried on patients with poor ovarian reserves, different protocols for stimulation, different add-ons in attempts to improve pregnancy rate and response for the stimulation. Unfortunately, no one of these regimes have been shown to be the best in this group of patients and the use of DHEA, prior to stimulation, is one of these interventions. Some studies have shown that oral administration of this supplement increases serum levels of insulin growing factors which has a positive effect on follicular development and oocyte quality. So we know the mechanism of action of the DHEA but some studies didn’t show this good result so, I suppose, that we need further investigations to clarify if it really can improve reproductive outcomes and if it can do this – which dosages and which regimens should be used because different studies have shown totally different regimens, totally different dosages so, we actually don’t know which way will be better to prescribe.
DHEA helps when trying to conceive because of its anti-inflammatory action but also because it has been shown that increased consumption has been linked to improved fertility. It’s not again a panacea, it’s not one pill for everything, it’s not gonna solve everything but it can have an anti-aging effect on the eggs but also to improve sperm quality.
