PCOS is linked with insulin resistance and that condition is associated with weight problems. We often hear about PCOS belly. What is it and why is this happening to PCOS patients?

Well you can’t because there’s no successful treatment for PCOS at the moment. There is however a way to manage some of the symptoms and one of the symptoms is insulin resistance which actually is shown, is linked to what you mentioned as the PCOS belly so, it causes that. So, if you try to reduce sugar intake, eat high fiber foods, have a non-inflammatory diet full of fruits and vegetables, including fish as well in your diet and sleep well during the night. Some people also find the beneficial effect of intermittent fasting for insulin resistance so, following these things would help with insulin resistance management and potentially will help you with probably either losing weight also showing your weights a little bit smaller.

Unfortunately some women with PCOS might experience some weight gain. Predominantly it can be found around the middle, that is very classic, you might notice it around your tummy. That can obviously be really distressing and can cause problems with your self esteem and your lack of confidence. The number one treatment for PCOS is lifestyle change and in particular that is to do with your diet. There is no one PCOS diet despite what you might read, when you go onto google. But what we do know is that reducing your refined carbohydrates, your sugars, can significantly help you with weight loss. So if you’re struggling with that excess weight around the middle, try looking at cutting out cakes, biscuits, try changing white bread, pastas and rice to the brown wholewheat alternatives. This you might find will start to make a difference and you will feel better too.

In terms of how you lose this weight; I’d say most of the women I’ve dealt with who want to try and lose weight, I actually enroll in the services of our colleagues, the nutritionists, and dietitians. They are much, much better than me personally. I give a bit of nutritional advice but then really the dietitians and nutritionists are much in my view, better than I am at giving that kind of advice and I work in tandem with them. And so the patients go and they have an actual assessment of what their current diet is like, the nutritionist looks into what kind of foods they’re eating. Lots of people talk about cutting out carbohydrates but it’s not cutting out carbohydrates, but cutting out the bad carbohydrates and having good carbohydrates long last, you know, not eating white bread but eating brown bread, the kind of foods they’re eating, not the ones with excess sugar in them. So it’s not my area of specialization, but I work with lots of very, very well qualified nutritionists who specialize in nutrition for women around fertility and they’re the ones who I actually work with and I refer my patients to go and have an assessment of what they’re eating and see what can be changed, and those changes do help in their metabolism so that that gets their insulin levels lower. If the insulin levels go up, it helps them shed off that weight.
