For multiple reasons – it’s one of those cases that the egg makes the chicken or the chicken makes the egg because with PCOS we see that as weight increases the PCOS severity and the symptoms are severe as well. It becomes worse and on the other hand as well when we have PCOS it’s really hard to lose weight and it’s very easy to gain weight. One of the reasons for that is because your body does not metabolize glucose as effectively and does not act on glucose the same way. Insulin is not as effective because you have too much of it so, eventually you develop what is called insulin resistant because of the higher concentrations of insulin not being used by the body effectively and that it also leads to higher lipid storage so, you are prone to store fat quicker and to some water retention as well. So the most important factor there is that you will put on fat quicker and you will retain that fat for a longer period of time, so it will be harder to lose the weight.

Because you have a hormonal imbalance, that impacts on something called insulin resistance. This is your body’s ability to use all the insulin in your bloodstream. So when you’re not using that insulin in the bloodstream, it can then impact on all your other hormones and sadly, the ability to not use that insulin means you are not able to get rid of the refined sugars and carbohydrates in your system as well as somebody without PCOS. By eating a healthy diet, that is low in refined carbohydrates and sugars, you will find it is easier to perhaps lose some of that extra weight and start having more of a healthy lifestyle.

In PCOS the major problem and the primary problem is insulin resistance genetically in the tissues. Insulin is a hormone which provides the cells with glucose and the glucose gets utilized by those cells to make energy but because the cells are resistant to insulin so, for supply of glucose these patients need more insulin level in their blood which means more insulin is secreted in their blood from their pancreas (insulin is a growth hormone) so, insulin resistance leads to high insulin levels. High insulin levels lead to more fat cells and more hunger so, that is why this vicious circle leads to difficulty in losing weight. If the patient wants to lose weight because they feel hungry and dietary modification is very difficult for them and because there are more fat cells because it is a growth hormone, they need more physical exercise probably, more targeted approach, more motivation. That is why the whole thing is difficult.
