The missed miscarriage by definition occurs when a fetus is no longer alive within the gestation sac and the body is recognizing that obviously that pregnancy has ended or may not have recognized that pregnancy has ended, so the gestation suck is still inside the uterus with the fetus inside the uterus and the fetal pole and has no fetal heart activity. The gestational tissue will still be producing some hormones, so that’s the reason why women may still be experiencing some symptoms of pregnancy but the pregnancy per se is not continuing.

Miscarriage is a descriptive term essentially for us doing an ultrasound scan, where we find out that the pregnancy hasn’t developed or the baby’s heartbeat stopped but the woman’s not had any symptoms. Often the most common time that this happens is when a woman goes for a 12-week dating scan or a nuclear translucency scan and it’s often very shocking that the pregnancies are not developed as they expected.
