Can I go to work after egg retrieval?
Can you go back to work after IVF egg retrieval?
Egg retrieval is done under general anesthesia and for this reason it is recommended to take rest for the entire day. Most patients return to work the following day but some side effects like abdominal cramping, pain and light spotting can last for a couple of days.
Although egg retrieval is a relatively straightforward procedure with very low risk, these risks can increase if we don’t follow the instructions of our doctors. We usually recommend staying at home for 24 hours after the collection. This is primarily due to the risk of experiencing some bleeding and not so much because of the sedation, which is very light and not particularly risky. Therefore, if you follow the instructions and, for example, work from home, if in the afternoon or evening, you feel fine, you can resume your activities with no problem. However, what we do recommend is avoiding physical activity for 24 hours after the collection.
The recommendation after an egg retrieval is to, well that is my recommendation at least, is to rest the day of the retrieval but in some cases, if there’s not a chance to do this rest, well, they can actually go to work or to do their normal life. We just tell them to attend if they have any pain or any discomfort and let us know.
Absolutely not, I would advise that patients do not attempt going to work after egg retrieval, especially if they have had any sedation or deep sedation. Usually we always advise our patients not to go back to work after egg collection, simply because the sedatives that have been used will feel very drowsy on the day, even after egg collection . We advise you to go home with either your partner or someone to come and pick you up after the egg collection. Go home, have a nice meal, sleep it out .That day absolutely no activity. You go back home straight, no going back to work. You just take it easy, you relax, have a good night’s rest as well and next morning you are okay to go back to work but not the same day.
