How long before an IUI should the male abstain from intercourse/ejaculating and store up sperm?
Why do you need to abstain before IUI?
Answer from:
Gynaecologist, Consultant in Reproductive Medicine Phoenix Hospital Group
The recommendation is usually between 2-3 days of abstinence and this is to give the chance for the sperm to be in a normal form. We do not like 1 or 7 days so as to avoid the free radicals that could be present. The longer the sperm waits in the epididymis to be ejaculated, the more they are affected by the free radicals. So oxidative stress is higher at that point therefore we are suggesting to be abstinent between 2-3 days.
