Miscariagge can happen to any woman for various reasons. Usually it happens because of chromosomal abnormalities within the embryo. There is aproximately one percent of women who suffer from “repeated miscarriage”.

So miscarriage is relatively common in pregnancy and we would normally say that about 10 to 12 % of pregnancies could end in a miscarriage and the risk of miscarriage normally increased with having previous miscarriages. So the chances of having first miscarriage is about 1 in 10 so about 10 to 12% and the risk of having a second miscarriage after the previous miscarriage, doesn’t increase significantly. However after having had two miscarriages, the risk of having a third miscarriage increased to about 20% and the risk of having a fourth miscarriage (so after three previous miscarriages) could increase up to 50% and that is why after three consecutive miscarriages, there is a consensus to start some investigations because the risk of miscarriage increases.

Unfortunately miscarriage is really very common and approximately one in four pregnancies ends in a miscarriage. It’s unfortunately also quite age-related. So, the chance of you having a miscarriage in your early 20s is really quite different to you have chance of having a miscarriage in your 40s. Will it happen again? Well, we have to be honest – we know that women who’ve had a miscarriage before are a little bit more likely to have a miscarriage than someone who’s never had one. On the other hand, most women who have miscarriage, the next time they get pregnant, it’s a healthy and successful pregnancy.
