AMH, without a doubt.
AMH is the best way so far that we can predict how many eggs are in the ovaries and by adding the age of the woman, we can talk about the quality of the eggs. AMH is the best biomarker so far.

There are hormonal levels examined – AMH (Anti-Müllerian hormone) is a very valuable examination at the very beginning because it represents the ovarian reserved in the woman, the strength of the reserve of the eggs.

Is the AMH test which is the blood test and it comes back within a reference range – the higher the number, the better. The second is the Antral Follicle count scan – an ultrasound scan which counts a number of follicles on each ovary and that gives doctors a good across-the-board marker of how that woman is likely to stimulate during an IVF cycle. There are other tests as well that can be done in conjunction looking at your thyroid, looking at your follicle stimulating hormone – not just it’s a proper full assessment that you need.

There is a whole array of tests that we can use to measure ovarian reserve. We do know from our studies that the best two tests are anti-mullerian hormone also known as AMH and the antral follicle counts on an ultrasound scan also known as AFC. These both will give an accurate representation of how many eggs there are and also what are the chances that will get a high number of eggs during stimulation and IVF treatment. We mustn’t forget that it’s not just about the number it’s about the quality, so the age of a woman will also often predict the ovarian reserve but more importantly the quality of the eggs.

About this question:

How do you test for ovarian reserve?

Screening tests include measurement of hormone levels: AMH, FSH and LH. AMH along with AFC will give the information about  the ovarian follicle pool. We need to remember that those numbers combined with the patient’s age are the most important.
