Which hormone tests for the diagnosis of polycystic ovary syndrome?

Studies showed that levels of testosterone, androstenedione or LH were raised in close to 90% of women with PCOS either alone or in combination. Hence, these hormonal tests should be performed to properly diagnose patients.

said only when we suspect Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome that is when the test is done, that’s when we do. I wouldn’t say when it’s just suspect Polycystic but if you suspect some kind of hormone disorder in a woman and she has irregular periods, that’s when you test things like testosterone, the free androgen index that DHEA, DHEA-S and also the thyroid function and prolactin because all of these abnormalities in all of these hormones can lead to menstrual disorders and so not all women who have irregular periods, should assume they have Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome. It is very important that they see their doctor for that and then, the doctor gets to investigate them properly, the fertility specialist to investigate them properly to make sure that they’re making the right diagnosis. Luckily, it’s fairly uncommon but there’s sometimes when I’ve come across a few women and I have to say that it’s it’s very few women who have been diagnosed as as having Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome and it’s turned out later that they actually don’t have Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome. They have another hormonal disorder such as hyperthyroidism, things like Graves’ disease which has led them to have irregular periods but actually it had nothing to do with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome – it had to do with their thyroid function.
