Well, what we do basically is a follow-up of the progesterone levels in a blood sample – just to check that they are in the correct level and actually give some more if needed and basically that and be ready if anything wrong happens like, as we were telling before, if the patients start with a heavy bleeding. That will put us in contact earlier than expected. What we usually do is, after the blood test, the pregnancy blood test around day 10, we do the calculation and we see an initial between the sixth and the seven weeks of pregnancy to do the ultrasound. By doing the ultrasound, we can confirm a clinical diagnosis of the pregnancy and that’s how far we get in the process.

The first scan is usually performed a week later after a positive pregnancy test. During this scan, we try to find the gestational sac inside the uterus. And then probably two weeks later we can find an embryo and the heartbeat. This is in the seconds count. That will depend on the pregnancy. Some patients will do just the ultrasound screenings; considering the local documents, someone will check every week. So that depends. But regarding IVF we have two scans.

There is no real check up after the embryo transfer. Checks can be related with the egg retrieval has been done in a good way, there is no complication after that in terms of bleedings or infections. In terms of pregnancy, the only check to be done really is the first pregnancy test – just to know if there is pregnancy or not. Sometimes (depending on the policy of every doctor and the clinic) we perform more than one pregnancy test just to be sure that the increase of Beta-HCG is going in a good way and is away from the chances of getting ectopic pregnancy because this is one of complications with the IVF. If there is some suspicion of Beta not increasing in the proper way, we can continue with that kind of check and at some point, we can perform an early scan, just to try to find out where the pregnancy is located.

About this question:

What should be done at what time?

IVF procedure is highly costly both financially and emotionally and for this reason, we want to do virtually everything possible to achieve pregnancy. Best is to be prepared and know what to expect on each step during the process.
