What is the link between long-term stress and infertility in men and women?

We often hear about couples who after many years of trying to conceive via IVF, gave up, let it go and after some time they got pregnant naturally. Could stress be a factor here inhibiting them from conceiving ? What is the link between bad stress and infertility?

No, in general, is getting an agitated immune system so, everything that can agitate the immune system – that’s why. Have you ever heard that women with stress cannot conceive? Stress is an important factor to agitate the immune system. People who are stressed have much more rigid immune system and are much more activated. That’s why it’s very characteristic when some women they go out of the stress, stressful period, some of them they can conceive because it’s this little thing that makes the water to spill out of the glass – by removing this little drop or a bit of water then, the water does not spill out and everything is fine.

100%, I know when I was told that I was infertile, I was stressed a lot, worried and anxious as to what people would think. I was scared to speak up but speaking up is the best thing that you can do, there was a weight lifted off of my shoulders. A lot of men and women have reached out to me ever since and to think back to all those years where i was stressed and worried, it was all for nothing because everything is fine, like i said a weight is lifted off of your shoulders. There is no need to stress, men tend to stress more in the early days but reaching out and talking to people makes a big difference.

One often asks the question if stress impacts your fertility. There have been many studies over the years but none of them really looked at women trying to conceive or women prior to conceiving and what type of stress or what type of personality type they have. If we look at the relationship we have with the mind and body, the field of psycho-neuro-immunology definitely shows that there is a link between stress and illnesses like cancers, headaches, or autoimmune diseases.

Over the centuries people have had large families. Even if they have gone through the world pandemics, poverty, war they still have had traditionally large families. So the one thing that has changed is the fast pace of living. This seems to have created chronic stress. As opposed to being stressed in the moment acutely and secreting adrenalin, the time urgent perfectionist seems to stress chronically. A study that we did over 22 years ago shows that if we could manage the self-induced stress and bring it down in people going through IVF, they would have more than double the chances of conceiving.
