This is a misconception. There is no specific thing that a woman can do to prevent the risk of miscarriage. I think the miscarriage must be investigated and certainly my advice to women is if you have had three consecutive miscarriages within the first trimester of pregnancy, you should undergo investigation and if a problem is found, then treatment have to be proposed. There is nothing that can be done to prevent the risk of miscarriage apart from, as mentioned earlier, have a normal healthy, balanced diet, avoid smoking and drinking and sometimes there are some medications that could increase the risk of miscarriage and those medications should be avoided for a certain number of months prior to embarking on pregnancy.

Certainly. Things one can do health-wise to try and influence miscarriage but again I think it’s really important to say that the most important, thing is it’s not what you do but living a healthy lifestyle, not smoking, trying to maintain a healthy weight, for example. All of those we know have a potential to help but again I’m always really really careful with my patients, to make sure that they know that it’s not a set of things in your control for the most part that are going to make the difference.
