Are there any ways to make myself more fertile?

Fertility is a complex topic where many studies were conducted and still there is no simple answer to many questions. Some experts insist on dietary factors having influence on quality of eggs, others on contrary say that there is no impact of nutrition. Where the truth lies?

Lifestyle is very very important. We women are born with the eggs we have, we don’t continuously produce new ones so, our eggs age with us and therefore not only the age with us, every month that we ovulate we lose around 700 to 1000 follicles in order for one egg to be developed so, our bodies are not that efficient in production of eggs. So we have a limited reservoir of egg that we are born with and we go through life using and depleting the same reservoir of egg. So, it is very important that we maintain a healthy ovary in order not to add to the aging process of the eggs. We know smoking, drinking alcohol, drugs, being overweight on the weight can all impact our egg reservoir, it can impact the quality of our eggs that we have, it can impact through oxidative and it gets very complicated by going to it but it can impact the quality and the the environment of the ovaries. So therefore, eating healthily, keeping a good healthy lifestyle, taking vitamins, eating food that is full of nourishments, fresh nourishments and avoiding junk food and so on, can assist us in maintaining a good healthy ovary that can maintain this premature aging of our eggs.

Actually there is no way to boost a woman’s fertility. I would say that this is scientifically wrong. The fertility of a woman is precise.
What one woman can do in order to enhance her chance to be pregnant – yes, that is possible but I would not call it “boosting fertility”.
These measures would be good alimentation, trying to eat more proteins and less carbohydrates that could help ovarian function. Aerobic activity, of course, can help women and ovarian metabolism so better ovarian quality. If she smokes and stops smoking – that would also help for sure and that is it.
All the pills that exist, all the medications that exist, vitamins that exist that are commercialised to boost fertility – I am not a fan and I don’t think they really help.

That’s a million dollar question and it’s the scary one because if you google this, you’ll get a million things that you could do. The problem is, there’s not a lot of them that are going to be really evidence-based and really have any certainty of benefit. I think clearly, if you look at enviro-social factors: yes – if you’re smoking – clearly that’s going to have an impact on egg number, sperm number and again embryo genetics. That’s the one thing absolutely that you would recommend to decrease. Lots and lots of talk about alcohol – yes – if your alcohol consumption is at an extreme – then yes, that should be decreased but at moderate levels probably not going to have a massive impact. If there is a big nutritional issue, then getting some nutritional advice and optimizing that would be sensible. Again, the vast majority of us aren’t doing anything that really is gonna have a massive impact. In terms of supplements, there are lots of supplements out there for men, so something with an antioxidant and the key vitamins like vitamin C, Zinc, Selenium, something like Proxy Plus or one of the other ones would be sensible. Again, probably there after being discussed with your doctor. Again, optimizing vitamin D levels is sensible without a correct evidence based on it improving fertility. A little bit of data on coenzyme Q10 as a supplement that may improve that quality but not definitive. There’s not one magic formula that improves things, so really getting a little bit of a generic workup, MOT and then having a chat with your doctor to decide if there is anything you can do.

Okay, how to help you get pregnant; actually, we need to say there are things that help prepare you to get pregnant and also increase the chances of a healthy pregnancy and a healthy baby. This is the use of a folic acid supplement. There are so many studies that will say okay, it will improve or reduce the chances of the baby having a neural tube defect like a spinal Bifida. So we advise women to enter preconception period months before trying to get pregnant using folic acid which is available as a supplement of 0.4 milligrams. However, there are a group of women who need a higher dose of folic acid like five-milligram folic acid. Those are women who are diabetic, who are overweight with a body mass index of more than 30, and women who have used epileptic drugs or have a mal-absorption syndrome, so folic acid is important.

Another thing; for pills to get you pregnant, I will leave that to your doctor who will decide on that. I’ll certainly not advise buying the drug over the internet, because these are really tailored to your condition. The traditional drugs used for oral ovulation induction are two drugs; one of them is called Clomiphene citrate or Clomid, and the other one is called Letrozole. These are ovulation induction drugs we prescribe to our patient to be used from the second day of the period for five days, mainly for polycystic ovaries or other ovulation causes. These can be given by the doctor because they usually would be monitored through the scan or blood test. So I wouldn’t advise you to use them without a doctor’s input.

Another medication really is to improve your general well-being or your health. So if you have diabetes or blood pressure, please control that, and make sure these medications are pregnancy-friendly medications. If you’re on antidepressants for any reason, also discuss that with your doctor as sometimes we have to change them to more pregnancy medication drugs. So this is in summary the drugs you may be offered to get you pregnant.
