Is there any way DHEA may have an impact on oocyte quality or quantity?

DHEA is an abbreviation used for Dehydroepiandrosterone, a hormone that is produced in the human body by adrenal glands. In what cases DHEA is useful? Can it have a bad influence in some cases? How does it work, and who can benefit from it?

DHEA is very important for fertility and it’s very important for fetal development when pregnancy occurs as well. However, when it comes to egg quality prevention is the best way to deal with it because we are born with oocytes so, it’s very important to have some preventive measurements, so to think ahead as women regarding our egg quality. When egg numbers start dropping, there’s no way of reversing that but there is a diet and lifestyle changes can actually preserve the one that we have at that point. So what we can do is exercise, find ways to distress like meditation, exercise as we said before or other ways of relief maybe some hobby and then in terms of nutrition DHEA is a very important factor and it’s important to have both monounsaturated for women and polyunsaturated but also with a focus on monounsaturated. Polyunsaturated is very important as long as we are aware of the heavy metals concentrations in some fishes like salmon or bigger, bigger oily fish. If we get it distilled or from smaller fish like sardines, there’s less of a risk of contamination from heavy metals.

DHEA we discussed earlier in case of “poor responders” do not affect the quality. It is wrong to say that whatever we take orally will affect the quality. The only thing that can do, can maybe improve quantity but we should not expect great changes but if the patient could give us 10 eggs maybe with DHEA, I repeat 4-5 weeks before the IVF cycle, maybe we can get 1-2 eggs more. These are results of the studies coming from the States from 2016-2016 which tells us that good preparation with DHEA may give us 1 or 2 eggs more than usual.
