Can anxiety and stress cause miscarriage?

What can have impact on miscarriage? Is there a certain level of stress? Do our mental well-being have any impact on miscarriage?

I think the reason there is growing evidence to suggest that stress can cause miscarriage and I think what we know is that generally excessive stress is not good for the health. We know that overall health is affected by stress but there is no strong evidence to suggest that high level of stress caused a miscarriage. I would say probably 10 to 20% of pregnancies that end in a miscarriage, I think women are generally more stressed after the miscarriage than before the miscarriage, so they may experience anxiety in some sequent pregnancies because what has happened in the previous pregnancy. But certainly, in my opinion, stress and which has been suspected for a very long time as cause of miscarriage has got less impact compared to nutrition and habits such as smoking, alcohol and use of drugs on the pregnancy outcome.

Those are really interesting questions and I think the best evidence that we have doesn’t support stress as being a big influencer on what happens to a miscarriage. And all of that said again, when I talk to my patients, I always think it’s really important that whatever you do in your next pregnancy which is going to be stressful, let’s face it, you do what you think is right for you. I don’t think there’s rights or wrongs whether you’re working, whether you take time off, whether you exercise. I think you do what makes you feel best, healthiest, keeps your mental health as best as it can. No, there really isn’t good evidence that stress causes miscarriage.
