Never try to be your own doctor or your own health care professional and take more supplements because unfortunately, supplements are not regulated which means sometimes, you can have a very big quantity so, always check the guidelines what do they say, if they say “if you are pregnant check with your health care provider” – do check with your health care provider. So, there are some supplements like vitamin D in very high doses can be toxic, vitamin C can be toxic with high dosages for people with kidney problems, DHEA can be contraindicated with people who are on blood thinners. So there are ways for supplements to be harmful for you, so it’s always best to check and act with someone who has the knowledge to support you on that.

Generally speaking, fertility supplements are safe, however it’s not guaranteed. Fertility supplements or supplements in general are not ‘policed’ as much as medication is so we can see perhaps, higher levels of certain nutrients than what we usually expect. But generally across the board, they do tend to be safe. What I tend to see with women that come to me is that people can be taking multiple supplements at the same time and not realise that they are doubling or tripling certain nutrients. So if you are taking a prenatal supplement and you have calcium and vitamin D or a stand alone vitamin D, you could be taking three lots of vitamin D at the same time when you only need to be taking one, so this is just a piece of advice to bear in mind.
